Dr. Panayiotis N. Soucacos
Dr. Soucacos received his MD at the University of Athens, School of Medicine in 1965 and took a post-graduate position at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina as a Clinical and Research Fellow (1971-1975). His first academic position was with the faculty of the Orthopaedic Department at the University of Athens in 1975 as an Assistant Professor. In June 2002, Dr. Soucacos was elected Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Athens, School of Medicine and retired from the University and academic medicine in August 2009. Dr. Soucacos established the “Orthopaedic Research and Education Center” (OREC) for fostering post-graduate research in the fields of Microsurgery, Biomechanics, Tissue Engineering and Immunohistochemisty from a private research grant. In 2001, the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens unanimously voted to name the center “Panayotis N. Soucacos” in tribute to his efforts in fostering orthopaedic surgery in Greece. Among his 40 awards and special recognitions, the most notable are the Award for Academic Excellence presented by the President of the Greek Democracy in 1996.
In 2019 he was voted by the Honors Committee of the American College of Surgeons, as Honorary Fellow of the College, as a tribute to his outstanding achievements in surgery, international scientific reputation and his distinguished humanitarian services.
